Butte County is known for its great food, great sights and of course the "City of Roses," Chico. The city was founded in 1860 by John Bidwell and was incorporated on January 8, 1872. It is considered as the cultural, economic and educational center of the county. The city's boundaries reached the Sierra Nevada to the east, and the Sacramento River to the west. Being the educational center of Butte County, Chico prides itself as it houses the California State University, Chico, one of the better known campuses of the California State University System. CSU, Chico, is one of the top employers of the city, and one of the driving force of the city's economic growth. It is also the 2nd oldest campus of the CSU system, and is also commonly known as Chico State University. Its history is as rich as the city it lives in. it was established on March 12, 1887 through a legislative act, and the same act has chosen Chico as its location. CSU, Chico first opened its doors on September 3, 1889, and was home to thousands and thousands of students ever since.




With its Mediterranean climate and lush greenery, Chico has become one of the main stops in California. As a center of education, students from different states and even from different countries come to Chico and indulge themselves with the high-quality education CSU, Chico has to offer. With the yearly increase of people, particularly students, that come to Chico, the city government is having a hard time housing all of them.
